Paticca-samuppada, the chain, or law, of dependent origination, or the chain of causation—a fundamental concept of Buddhism describing the causes of suffering (dukkha; Sanskrit duhkha) and the course of events that lead a being through rebirth, old age, and death.
Avijjāpaccayā sankhārā, sankhārapaccayā viññānam
viññānapaccayā nāma-rupam, nāma-rupa paccayā salāyatanam
salāyatanāpaccayā phasso, phassapaccayā vedanā
vedanāpaccayā tanhā, tanhāpaccayā upādānam
upādāna paccayā bhavo, bhavapaccayā jāti
jātipaccayā jarāmaranam soka-parideva-dukkha-domanassaupāyāsā sambavanti.
The Paţiccasamuppāda can be described in one phrase: ‘conditioned or dependant origination’, i.e. it is because
of ignorance (avijjā) that volitional formations (sankhāra) come to be etc. In this manner the twelve links that comprise this doctrine has been described.
